I've talked about GPS before but usually in the context of geotagging pictures (e.g. Maps and mobiles). I am aware of its educational potential but have never tried it with a class myself. However I was unaware that GPS technology was beginning to find its way into games.

Location-based mobile social networking is just getting started in the U.S., and there's a lot of hype surrounding it. But will that hype turn into dollars?

Research firm ABI Research predicts the nascent industry will turn into a $3.3 billion market worldwide by 2013. Where will that money come from? Location-based mobile advertising "holds a lot of promise," notes ABI analyst Dominique Bonte, in a statement. But "the current reality" suggests licensing and subscription revenue-sharing -- like Loopt's recent deal with Verizon Wireless -- the most likely near-term revenue streams.

Garmin GPS Smartphone Delayed Until 2009

Garmin's nüvifone, a GPS-enabled quasi-smartphone, has been delayed until some time in the first half of 2009.

A Garmin executive mentioned the nüvifone's rollback as part of an announcement that the company's revenue had fallen $600 million short of analyst expectations for the quarter, which sent stock shares down almost 22%.
